CPS Case Study - High School Wednesday April 10, 2002: Real-time Assessment in Instruction using Instructional Technology by Michael Perry PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Students are motivated to participate and learn by using an interactive learning system named the Classroom Performance System (CPS). CPS was developed by eInstruction to provide instant feedback for classroom teachers. CPS will provide real-time feedback for an instructor similar to how the audience is polled in the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" TV show. An instructor can also use CPS to test students at the end of a unit as a graded exercise. PRESENTATION ABSTRACT CPS (Classroom Performance System) is cutting edge technology that allows me to assess student understanding of the concepts being taught while I am teaching the concepts. This hardware and software combination features the ability to ask students questions and immediately collect and analyze their answers. CPS uses student keypads that look like small remote controls. This is similar to the way the audience is polled in ABC's popular "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" show. Results of each question are displayed after all answers have been entered. This helps students learn in their own way - interactively. It also is a motivation tool that allows all students to participate without concern over answering a question incorrectly. Using the CPS system does eliminate choral responses to many questions during a lecture. Research has shown that the system does improve student performance and test scores. ![]() CPS provides real time feedback for me to check student understanding during a large group instruction. This feedback allows me to change and modify instruction based on the understanding and needs of my students revealed through my on-screen questioning. It also clues my students into what information they missed and will need to learn or review. The last benefit of using this system is to make the lecture format more interactive, thereby increasing student learning and engagement. Many students have told me that they think learning this way is neat and improves their grades. I use CPS in tandem with Microsoft PowerPoint to display notes. I also use specific application software during demonstration. I can easily switch from demonstration to notes to testing understanding with CPS and back again. ![]() CPS (Classroom Performance System) ends assessment scoring nightmare. Perry states that he won the lottery, because he no longer has to grade tests. The students have fun taking their test using CPS and enjoy the instant feedback both on the screen and in knowing their final grade on the assignment. He states that he has barely scratched the surface of how CPS might be used. However, if he never uses it for more than testing, he believes it is great and a true time saver that improves assessment and student feedback.www.einstruction.com .

About eInstruction eInstruction pioneered the first student response system for the education market during the 1980s. Its Classroom Performance System (CPS) provides instructors and students with real-time feedback on comprehension during instruction. Today CPS remains the leading student response system in education, being used with over 1.5 million students in more than 60,000 K-12 classrooms and over 400,000 students in more than 400 colleges and universities. In 2006, eInstruction acquired FSCreations and integrated its ExamView® and Learning Series software and content platforms so instructors can seamlessly use publisher and proprietary question banks in lesson plans, quizzes and tests with eInstruction technology. The result is an integrated system for instruction and assessment with real-time feedback. |
